I am writing this at 36,000 ft on my way from Albuquerque, NM back to Charleston, SC. The significance of this is that it is proof we have made it west. We did it. We were able to “jump off” so to speak. A lot has happened since we left Maine. Sailing in Annapolis, seeing friends and family along the east coast, and multiple discussions on where we want to winter. Each with a change of heart and direction every time. We got stuck. We drove 95 too often, and worst of all we were all getting bored. So in late October we hit the road again. For good this time. A marathon trip to Mobile, AL to visit our friends and spend a promised Halloween on the ranch. Also, the opportunity to prepare for the trek west. We headed for Texas and spent time on our friends farm outside Dallas. Then to south west Texas, outside San Antonio, to Gonzales to meet a dear friend of Wendy’s. During this time I was still traveling almost every week. I was feeling travel weary, I fly all week, I drive all weekend. I knew I needed a break. I was beginning to wonder what we were doing again. Wendy knew I needed a break too. We had to slow down again. We hit New Mexico for the week of Thanksgiving, and I am only traveling for fun with the family. Carlsbad Caverns was awe inspiring. An awesome example of what nature can do. I know Wendy will be posting some cool pics. Kirsten and I explored all the caverns that went 800 ft below ground together. We stayed outside Carlsbad, in what seemed to be the middle of the desert at Brantley Lake State Park. It was just what I needed. A few days of down time. Long runs on empty desert roads, and of course, time with the family to just be and enjoy Thanksgiving. From there we headed to White Sands National Monument and Valley of Fires. We crossed a snow covered mountain to get there, but again totally worth it. The diversity of the terrain is hard to describe. 10,000 plus foot mountains that open onto sandy deserts. The vistas are gorgeous. I learned Albuquerque is higher than Denver. Makes for some interesting runs. I have three weeks of planned crazy travel again, and then two weeks to slow down at the end of the year. The current plan is to head to Tucson, AZ and then into Palm Desert, CA to spend my birthday and holidays. It will be a much needed break. It is good to see everyone energized again, including me. I am sure this will come up in one of her posts…but now Wendy wants a fifth wheel toy hauler, and to keep the show going a little longer. It’s a Voltage 3950 and will give us an extra bedroom and bathroom, a loft for the kids and plenty of space to make the rest of this big adventure even better. Time to go read that first blog post of mine again.

And then there was…..SNOW!
Nothing, absolutely nothing, prepares you for spontaneous, out -of -nowhere, where in the %$&# did that come from, SNOW while driving an RV through the mountains.
It started out all innocent. A beautiful drive. Sun was shining and then these clouds showed up…..
10 minutes later….
I was also turning white, digging my nails into the seat, reminding the kids to buckle up every 5 seconds and generally falling apart. I was pretty sure we were going to slide down the mountain and die. Yeah, I was convinced. Matt? Not so much. He had it all under control. Just drove that RV like it was our little van. And guess what? Once we crested that mountain and started back down the other side, just like that…
It’s amazing what climbing to 9300 ft can do to a nice, sunny day! New Mexico…..we will NEVER forget you!
The big 10
We threw Kirsten a surprise birthday party after visiting the caverns. I just can’t believe my little girl is in the double digits. I am SO not ready for this!
because *somedays* I really want to say “knock knock ……” but I settled on a 2 pack of Barbies instead. She loves those Barbies. 1 point for good parenting decision. Just look at this face. How could you not? Fall. In. Love.
A LOT to be thankful for
We celebrated our first Thanksgiving on the road with our dear friends Jon and Jema and their kids. Jema, being the artist that she is, did craft projects with the kids to get everyone in the festive spirit. It was a great evening, but it did feel a little strange to not be around family and to not be cooking in a house. We managed to put out quite a feast from our combined 12 inch ovens, though. Jema even managed to cook 4 slices of turkey for her crew!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING from all of us to all of you!
Carlsbad, NM
The largest caverns in the US. WOW, they were not kidding about that. Just the entrance to the first cave was bigger than all of Lurray caverns in VA. The boys and I made it about 1/2 hour into the caverns before we all had the big freak out and let a ranger lead us out. Matt and Kirsten completed the entire 3 hour expedition. Our friends form the JeMa mobile were visiting the same day too so all the kids got their Jr Ranger badges together.
The McDonald Observatory
We drove 300 miles out of our way to see a HUGE telescope. The telescope itself was pretty neat. The guide giving the kids and I the advanced rocket science version (read :BORING) of the tour made us all want to stick a fork in our eyes. I had bad flashbacks to college. I told Matt “I need to drop this class”. Yes, it was *that* over my head. We left early, but not before we visited the gift shop to buy a solar powered race car. So, our educational day at the Observatory ended up being more about Solar Power than Solar Systems. We learned 2 important lessons: first, never sign up for a 4 hour tour of anything and second, sun makes car go fast!
We made the most of our venture into deep west TX by visiting Fort Davis and collecting another Jr Ranger badge. This fort was established to protect travelers on the El Paso trail. The kids learned a lot of history and really enjoyed visiting the grounds. The infirmary was a highlight of our visit. They have a display that lists all the people who died and the various gory reasons for their passing. This provided endless entertainment for the kids. “Mom, what’s disentary”, “Gross infection, that sounds really gross”, “Accidental shooting?!? I’d be really mad if I accidentally shot myself”, “Umm, Ethan, I think you’d be dead, not mad”…..
Texas LOVE Fest
We arrived in Gonzales TX! This has been the stop i have been waiting for since before this trip began. So, what the heck is in Gonzales, TX anyways? Not much. Except for this woman and her Amazo family…..
That’s Christine. She parents Trauma. She coaches other parents who are about to jump off a cliff from parenting trauma (that would be me). But, mostly, she is a rock star soul that oozes goodness and love. And I have a huge girl crush on her. HUGE. I freakin LOVE this woman. Love her. And her awesome family. She filled me up, helped me get my big girl panties back on and gave me the pep talk I needed to go on loving and helping my girl to heal. She gave me hope and encouragement and even a much needed kick in the ass. She even taught me to Hoop. And I love hoopin’. She’s awesome like that. And her punks? Awesome too. The kids had a blast with them and were super sad to say goodbye. So, Gonzales, TX may not look like much on the map, but I think it holds the eighth wonder of the world. At least MY world….
Dallas, TX
Dallas was a whirlwind of fun. We stayed at our friends farm. We were treated to wonderful hospitality, new and delicious food (African Chop, anyone?). We even got to go on a chicken buying field trip. That was FUN! We also experienced our first Native American Pow Wow. The kids really loved all the dress and dancing.
THANK YOU to the Burkett family for the hospitality!
Dallas was also the meet up point with the JeMa mobile!!! We met this amazing family last summer in Maine and have been in touch ever since. They have 4 awesome kids and we are so excited to be traveling with them through TX and into NM and CA!
